Book Review
BJ, a college student home in Pearl Lake for the summer, meets Winter after a near accident with his car. Intrigued, he pursues her to apologize and ask her out. Despite his commitment issues, BJ becomes serious about Winter. He’s a competitive figure skater with Olympic dreams, part of a wealthy, ex-NHL player friends’ circle. Winter, facing poverty and an abusive family, works to survive and support her kin, suppressing her hockey dreams. As their relationship grows, they provide mutual support, helping each other overcome their respective challenges.
I loved returning to Helena Hunting’s Lies, Hearts, and Truths series and this time learning BJ’s story! BJ is Lily and Randy’s son from the Pucked series. I loved seeing more of the two of them and getting to know BJ.
Shattered Truths is told in alternating first-person perspectives between BJ and Winter. Winter’s story broke my heart. With no one to rely on but herself, Winter is desperate to build a life away from her abusive father. She loves to play hockey, but she knows she will not go far without financial resources. When she meets BJ he introduces her to his father who asks her to join their women’s team. Joining their team with the support of their foundation completely changes Winter’s world for the better.
Winter is an incredibly resilient and independent character. I loved watching her learn to trust BJ and to accept help from others. Bj is also a wonderful character. He quickly falls for Winter and does everything in his power to help her, without making her feel as though she is his project. He is so sweet, both with Winter and with his family and friends.
If you are a fan of contemporary romance, particularly hockey romance, this one is for you! While Shattered Truths can be read as a standalone, there will be spoilers for the first two books.
Thank you to Helena Hunting for the advanced copy! All opinions are my own.
Synopsis from Goodreads
The first time I met Winter Marks, I almost took her out with my Jeep.
To be fair, she came out of nowhere.
I flirted with her, and she flipped me off and disappeared into the woods on her bike.
But she left me a souvenir: a single hockey skate.
Seemed to me that divine intervention shouldn’t be ignored.
She was my icy Cinderella and I would be her Prince Not-So-Charming.
Winter was more than just a sassy, badass hockey-playing hottie.
She’s stuck in a prison of a life. And I’m the perfect escape.
Neither of us expected to fall.
Or for the truth to shatter us.
